This book is a collection of recipes using onions. It is not, as one might hope, the final word on all things pertaining to the use of onions in the kitchen. There is some foreword matter, which looks like it was inspired by the Wikipedia, and there are some poems about onions, although not very good poems. While self-publishing has democratized the process of getting books into print, all is not well with the results. There is no editing, no copyreading, no quality control, no firm hand in being one's own publisher. One strongly suspects that Whispering Pine Press is a computer on Mrs. Matasko Hood's kitchen table in her Spokane Valley home. The recipes are of the simplest sort: pared down (no pun intended), bare bones (another unintended pun) with minimal instructions. They remind me of the recipes printed on the "ladies" page of the daily newspaper in the 1950s. They are preceded by comments like "These crab cakes are absolutely delicious" or "My two vegetarian daughters look forward to this soup" or "This is one of my all-time favorite dressings." None of this conveys useful information. Just because you thread some onions on the shish kebab does not make it an onion recipe. Just because you add some onions to the omelet doesn't make it an onion recipe. Just because you toss some chopped onions in the pâté for the Swedish meatballs doesn't make them an onion recipe. I doubt very much that I will ever consult this book; I'm not sure that I'll even keep it in my culinary library ... although getting rid of a cookbook is like divorcing one of your children, albeit one of the homely ones. You do not need this book in your collection. Better choices would be Barbara Ciletti, The Onion Harvest Cookbook, Newtown, CN: Taunton Press, 1998; Brian Glover, The Onion Cookbook, London: Anness Publishing LTD, 2001, or Jan Roberts-Dominguez, The Onion Book, New York: Doubleday, 1996.

Wonderful recipes in this book by Karen Jean Matsko Hood. I use onions in everything I make from Breakfast to Dinner recipes, if a recipe calls for onions then I'm going to like it. Everyone needs this cookbook in their collection of cookbooks.
